Welcome to the POST-Annual Enrollment Period {See the Video Below!!!} January 1 to March 31, 2020 Now the second fun season begins! We are now heading into what was before called the "Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period". This is covered on Medicare.gov here - click this link IMPORTANT! CMS does NOT want you to tell people about this opportunity! (Our guess is that the carriers have begged CMS to keep this quiet.) See the marketing guidelines from CMS about this "MA OEP" here. After December 7th, our Underwritten Medicare Supplement applications are ALL targeting a 2/1 effective date. For those coming off of Medicare Advantage back to Medicare Supplement: If they were approved late for a 1/1 effective date but did not get a drug plan by 12/7, they need to move the effective date for the Med Supp to 2/1. If they haven't applied yet, request a 2/1/20 effective date on the underwritten Medicare Supplement application. You can submit a 2/1 effective date, underwritten application, any time after December 1. (60-day rule) ONLY AFTER they are approved in Underwriting, and between Jan 1 - Jan 31, apply for a Part D plan using the SEP code "MA OEP". This makes the Part D start on the first of the next month and simultaneously cancels out the MAPD plan on that first of the next month (2/1 in this example). If you’re in a Medicare Advantage Plan (with or without drug coverage), you can switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan (with or without drug coverage). You can drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and return to Original Medicare. You'll also be able to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. What can't I do? Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan. Join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan if you're in Original Medicare. Switch from one Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to another if you're in Original Medicare. Note If you enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan during your Initial Enrollment Period, you can change to another Medicare Advantage Plan (with or without drug coverage) or go back to Original Medicare (with or without a drug plan) within the first 3 months you have Medicare. Each year during this time, the carriers (major ones anyway) announce an ease to their Underwriting timeline. Usually, you cannot submit a case for an Effective Date further than 60 days out. However, for AEP, the carriers are allowing you to write case for January 1 as far back as October 1st. So, for your Medicare Advantage people, for instance, that wish to go back to Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement on January 1, they can submit an application with health underwriting for a Medicare Supplement NOW and target the Effective Date for January 1. We have official notifications so far from Mutual of Omaha (and GPM Life), Aetna, Cigna. We have not heard from Humana, and they are typically the most restrictive even for someone in their initial election period (T65), requiring no more than 3 months prior to the effective date then.
