Where to Market Supplements: Picking a State (start in only one) The share of Medicare beneficiaries in Medicare Advantage plans across the United States ranges from 1% to over 40% AVOID the places in red in the map above or, preferably those over 40%. The red (above) indicate the concentrated areas of Medicare Advantage. The reason to avoid metro areas is three-fold: 1) The prevalence of $0 Premium MAPD HMO plans is attractive to T65's who think they are super healthy (majority) and will never need doctors, hospitals, etc. Many see no need to pay for something that COULD be obtained for free. By going rural, these choices simply do not exist (or as much). 2) Many agents are lazy. Most live in the bigger cities and will not go to the rural areas to market. They also won't even pick up a phone and will just work in their community. This means working in rural areas equals less competition. This has been proven over and over again. Less competition is good. 3) We work over the phone, so it does not matter WHERE we select. The above being true, and having the ability to "smart-bomb" our chosen area, why not go where the fruit hangs a little lower and no one else is there picking it? This spreadsheet will show the carriers and which states you MUST pre-appoint in before writing business. If you are not appointed in a state prior to writing business there, you will have to re-write the application.
