As we have covered in the past, the California market is very unique from the rest of the country in that they have the Birthday Rule. This allows anyone with an existing Medicare Supplement plan to change to an equal or lesser value plan letter within 30 days either side of their birthday. And that's the key - equal or lesser plan. So, Plan F can go to Plan F or Plan G, or Plan N. Plan N can only go to another Plan N, etc. Blue Shield of California has a very neat plan, called Plan F Extra. It has extra benefits, more than regular Plan F, which they sell, also. So, this cannot be purchased using the Birthday Rule, as it sits atop of Plan F. They can either get it when in Open Enrollment (new to Medicare) or through health underwriting at any time. These extra benefits of this plan include vision and hearing benefits, as well as a free medical personal alert system.
